In this short guide, I’ll show you how to add Google Analytics to your Shopify store. This guide is aimed at beginners and non-tech users.

Google Analytics helps you understand your target audience and their shopping behaviour.

You can see detailed reports on traffic sources, devices used and anything else.

All good if you don’t have a Google Analytics account yet. Creating one and running through this guide should take you no longer than 15 minutes.

This guide has 3 steps

  1. Get the Global Site tag code
  2. Add the Global Site tag code to your Shopify store
  3. Enable Enhanced eCommerce tracking in Google Analytics

Get the Global Site tag code

We first need to get your tracking code from your Google Analytics account.

Google Analytics uses the Global Site tag as a tracking code for your website.

  • If you don’t have a Google Analytics account already, then please sign up at https://analytics.google.com. You’ll be able to access your tracking code once done.
  • For those that already have a Google Analytics account for their Shopify store site. Please log into your account, click the admin button on the bottom left of the sidebar. Then, in the property column, select ‘Tracking Info’ and then ‘Tracking Code’.

Get the Google Analytics Global Site tag code

Your Global Site Tag code will be shared with you, under the ‘Website Tracking’ section.

Find your Global Site Tag code for Google Analytics in the website tracking section

Grab a copy of the code and place it in your clipboard, ready for the next step.

Add the Global Site tag code to your Shopify store

You now have everything you need to add the Global Site tag code to your Shopify store.

Open your Shopify store and login to your Admin section. Select ‘Online Store’ on your left sidebar and then select ‘Preferences’.

Add the Global Site tag code to your shopify store

Scroll down your admin preferences window, until you find the ‘Google Analytics’ section. Paste your Google tracking code in the empty input box.

Paste your Google Analytics global site tag code here in Shopify

Click the ‘Save’ button to confirm your changes.

Save the global site tag code changes to your Shopify store

Select the ‘Use Enhanced Ecommerce’ option and ‘save’ again.

If you see the ‘must upgrade to the latest version of Google Analytics’ message. Then, you will first need to upgrade your version of Google Analytics to GA4.

Please continue to our final step, or if you need to upgrade first, then visit our guide on how to Upgrade to GA4.

Enable Enhanced eCommerce tracking in Google Analytics

Enhanced eCommerce tracking allows product impressions, promotions and sales data to be sent with any of your Google Analytics pageviews and events.

Open your Google Analytics account, click ‘Admin’ and then click ‘Ecommerce Settings’ under the ‘View’ column.

Enable enhanced Ecommerce tracking in Google Analytics

Toggle ‘Enable Ecommerce’ and ‘Enable Enhanced Ecommerce Reporting’ to the ‘on’ setting. Then click the ‘Save’ button to confirm your changes.

Enable enhanced E-commerce and enhanced E-commerce reporting

You are now done! You’ll get detailed Ecommerce reports from your store on Google Analytics now.

This includes checkout screen tracking, something that Shopify Basic users don’t usually have access to.
